Impossible Shots | 09:41AM Nov 03, 2007
As per the request of one Mark Fleming is a shot from a BMX shoot we did a couple nights ago. I don't really have a whole lot to show from the shoot the other night. I do however have a reflection on it.
I found myself severly limited by my equipment. I had a dead flash and the D200, which for any of you that are familiar with Nikon know their high ISOs... well... they shouldn't even be an option on the camera they are so bad. So how do you capture light when there is none? I struggled and was stuck. I found myself cursing the people who know nothing about photography. "How do people who know nothing about photography get these night shots of action?" My dear friend Meg replied with "they don't know any better". How right she was. I was my own worst enemy in that moment becoming too wrapped up in the technical aspects.
I did have a couple of ideas, doing long exposures trying to capture Mark's flash with some motion blur with the camera on the tripod, I thought would probably be some pretty sick shots. That really didnt pan out so well. Then I tried the unspeakable on camera flash, that was crap too. Tried boosting the crud out of the ISO, shooting at 1600 planning on turning it into black and white. I still came away with nothing I was particularly excited about.
The second shot above was the only half way decent shot that I could post from that evening and I just lucked out and squeezed the trigger the same time Mark did and I grabbed his flash. The first shot was done several days earlier at the Bath indoor skatepark. Same lighting issue, cranked my ISO, super noisey, but what are you going to do?
Moral of the story, sometimes ignorance really is bliss, and it can be good to forget the tech stuff and just go for it anyway.
